  • Mapp gas
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Six sided socket or wrench

A rustRusted Nut and Bolty bolt is the last thing you want to deal with when you have a larger issue at hand. Breaking off the head, rounding the corners, and busting your knuckles are no fun. Here are a few ways that may make life easier when loosening that stuck fastener.

Step 1- Soak the Fastener

Penetrating OilSpray the threads of the fastener with penetrating oil and let then soak. You may need to spray them every half hour or so for a few hours if it is really rusty.

Step 2- Use Leverage

Lock Two Wrenches TogetherAttempt to turn the stuck bolt after soaking in penetrating oil. Be sure to use a six sided socket or closed end of a wrench. This will minimize the chances of the tool slipping off. Apply steady even pressure. Use an extension such as a pipe or another wrench if you have the clearance to add more leverage.

Step 3- Apply Heat

Mapp GasYou may need to apply heat using mapp gas if it still does not turn. It burns hotter than propane. If you can access the threads or backside of the fastener, that is where to apply the heat. It will allow the fastener to expand making it easier to turn. Once you get it hot keep it hot until the fastener is all the way out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy if you use mapp gas.
  • Mapp gas is dangerous! It can cause fires and injury. Use your head before you use the gas.
  • Do not touch the fastener with your bare hands once it is out if you use mapp gas. It will be extremely hot!
